Pet parents are beginning to become a lot more careful with what’s going into their pet’s food bowls. Natural and organic pet foods are increasingly turning into popular choices. According to PetFoodIndustry.com, pet lovers spent approximately $1 billion last year on natural pet food and $67 million on organic pet food.
Natural pet foods contain no chemicals at all. U.S. Association of American Feed Control Officials refers to “natural” as food or ingredients that come from only plant, animal or mined sources. This means that pet foods labeled “natural” should not contain any chemically synthetic processing aids and chemically synthetic additives such as artificial flavors, coloring or preservatives.
Natural pet foods can be made from whole ingredients like chicken, beef, vegetables and fruits.
Organic pet foods are foods that were raised without chemicals. They were grown or raised without the use of antibiotics, synthetic hormones, toxic pesticides or fertilizers.
Natural and Organic Pet Food Brands
• Innova
• EVO
• California Natural
• HealthWise
• Mother Nature
• Karma
If a pet owner is considering changing their pet’s diet to a natural or organic food, it is suggested to feed the pet a combination of the new and old food over a seven day period, this way the pet will better used to the new texture and smell.
On the first day, feed your pet 90% old food and 10% new food; continue on the second day with 80% old food, 20% new food and so on. At the end of the seven days, your pet should be fully comfortable with the new natural or organic food.

Pet Sitting is Necessary!
According to the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters, pet ownership in the U.S. is steady on the rise. Approximately 63 percent of all American families house a pet of some type. A 2007-2008 National Pet Owner Survey concluded that the US pet population includes 90 million cats, 73 million dogs, 16 million hamsters, birds, fish and other animals! Because pets tend to become very unhappy when taken out of their familiar surroundings, animal boarding and kennels are becoming second choice for most pet owners.
An innovative and safer alternative for ‘pet parents’ and their beloved pets is called pet sitting. Today, professional pet sitters provide that love and care all pets deserve all in the comfort of their homes. Luckily, the service benefits both the pet and pet owner.
Taking advantage of a professional pet sitting service reduces the anxiety of leaving a pet behind. Allow Queen City Pet Sitting to not only takes care of your pet, but to look after your home as well.

Positive Reinforcement
There are many different methods that pet owners and professionals use to train dogs. These training methods tend to be bases on the scientific principles of operant conditioning – which concentrates greatly on positive reinforcement.
Positive reinforcement is a great way to train your precious animal. With positive reinforcement, you are rewarding your pet for doing the behaviors you want. By rewarding a pet with delicious treats or toys will get him or her to do those behaviors more often. When you link a visual cue with motivational rewards, your pet learns that good things come when they respond correctly.
Many think of positive reinforcement as nothing more than a “bribe”. But, the reward is not supposed to be used as a bribe. The treat is simply a tool to shape good behavior in the form of being able to communicate, “Yes, you’re doing a great job!”
Be sure to check with your local pet store or Petsmart to learn more about their training classes.

"Mark Your Spot": Eliminating Pet Odors
Cleaning up after a pet that has had an accident in the house can be a very tedious thing. Not only is it your goal to clean up the area, but you should also try to neutralize the odor to discourage repeat visits from your pet. Dogs and cats both have a keen sense of smell and because of this the smell of urine acts as an attractant – encouraging them to often go back to the same spot.
After you have cleaned and removed the stain that a pet has left behind, it is then best to go one step further and treat the spot with an “enzymatic cleaner” to defuse the odor. Because pet odor is protein-based and cannot be removed by washing only, an enzymatic cleaner is your best bet. These type of cleaners break down the chemical nature of the ammonia, getting rid of the smell that triggers pets from “marketing” their favorite spots.
Queen City Pet Sitting has provided a list of guidelines to help defeat stains and odors.
Wood Flooring
Wipe the area with paper towels. Apply a small amount an enzymatic cleaner of choice intended for wood flooring to the area with a paper towel to prevent rapid evaporation. Allow area to completely dry and repeat daily until odor is eliminated.
Carpets
Soak up much of the wet area with clean paper towels until it is no longer wet. Saturate the area with an enzymatic cleaner. Let it dry naturally.
Vinyl
Clean area thoroughly and rinse with warm water. Wipe area with a sponge dampened with an enzyme cleaner intended for vinyl surfaces. Let the area air dry.
Clothing
Place clothing in a clean sink. Add an enzymatic cleaner intended for fabrics to the water. Let sit for a full cycle and then add detergent. Finish the cycle.

'Kitten-Proof' Your Home
Similar to brand new parents who have to ‘baby-proof’ their homes, new pet owners also have to ‘kitten-proof’ their homes for the arrival of their new kittens. Kittens tend to have lots of energy and are very curious little creatures, so everything at your home needs to be safe as possible.
Below is a list of ways to ‘kitten-proof’ your home:
• Gather all small and breakable items and place them in an off-limits room
• To keep your kitten from climbing or hanging on things, be sure to remove all table cloths from tables
• Either wrap or cut cords to blinds to avoid your kitten from getting tangled up
• Secure all cleaning products in closed cabinets
• Lock and secure all window screens and doors
• Unplug all appliances when not in use
• Place houseplants in the off-limit room (many of them are poisonous if ingested)
Queen City Petsitting hopes that these suggestion help to welcome your new kitten home in the best way possible. Be sure to do more thorough research in order to learn more. Also, visit your local pet store and talk to a pet specialist.

Queen City Petsitting Tips & Information
As Charlotte Petsitters, we strive to give you peace of mind while you are away from your beloved pet and home. With years of professional pet sitting experience, Queen City Petsitting is here to steer you away from those crowded and unhealthy kennels and boarding services! Our petsitters provide each pet with the tender love and care they need while you are away.
We are here to provide you with valuable information and tips on how to properly take care of your beloved pet. Please take each tip into consideration in order to grant your pet with a safe and healthy life.
#1 – Pet Insurance can be very beneficial for you & your precious pet
Pet insurance is an easy way to take control of a pet’s medical expenses. Research the various plans that are available and make it a duty to talk to your veterinarian to ensure the most appropriate type of coverage.
#2 – Good preventive care decreases the risk of pet dental disease
Dental plaque, tartar build up, and other bacterial infections are very common. If they aren’t properly taken care of then the spread of them throughout a pet’s body can affect their bodily organs.
Be sure to seek care for a pet if you notice signs such as: bad breath, weight loss, yellow teeth, nasal discharge, and/or red or swollen gum.
Good preventive care includes: purchasing chew toys, brushing teeth, feeding a pet premium pet food, and seeing your veterinarian regularly.
#3 – Store your pet’s food safely
Queen City Petsitting thinks that it is best to store food in a dry, cool place away from sunlight. Improperly storing pet food could give way to mold and other deadly toxins.
Be sure to buy only the freshest pet foods available and keep it in a place with a stable temperature. If the pet food has a foul odor or your pet refuses to eat it – discard the food or return it for a refund.
#4 – Use safer pet products at home and in the yard
Pets tend to be very nosey at times. As a pet owner, you should use products for your home and yard that are safe for pets and also benefit the environment at the same time.
Consider replacing lawn chemicals in favor of organic fertilizers.
During pet bath time, lather up with a natural approach. There are several products available that do not contain any artificial fragrances, sodium lauryl sulfates or artificial color.
Use yard and home products made of recyclable material.
Queen City Petsitting suggests that you invest in environmentally-friendly cleaning products that break-down non-harmful decomposition.
#5 – Purchase sustainable, durable pet products
Buy durable, long lasting toys that your pet can enjoy but not chew up in a matter of minutes! You can even purchase pet toys made of recycled materials, organic cotton, or recycled plastic bottles.
It would be more fun for you and your pet if you make your own toys. Remember, your pet doesn’t care what their toys look like – they just want something fun to play with!
#6 – Go green on holidays!
You should never be ashamed to celebrate holidays with your cat, dog, or snake! Whether it’s your pets birthday or Christmas make sure that each occasion is eco-friendly.
Consider wrapping a pet’s gift in newspaper, and then recycle the paper. It is a good idea to give your pets consumable treats and food. Handmade toys are also a great gift.
